DA TRAVEL EDITION: Kauai Getaway
DA Travel Edition: Kauai Getaway
Our team has been on the move lately, have you been able to keep up?
Last month we went on one last winter getaway in Wyoming. And this month started our spring break with a week on the garden island of Kauai. Now we have done Hawaii before, but never Kauai and we have the inside scoop on the must-go places for your next trip to the islands. From where we stayed, to the shave ice you can’t miss, dinner with the best views, and our favorite beaches.
Our Monday started at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. Picture this, a huge grand foyer with a view of the water, three 5-star restaurants, a room with rolling green hills that lead to the ocean, and a pool that leads you to a saltwater lagoon. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Choosing a place to stay can be tricky since you want to be able to do some exploring while you’re there so you want to be able to make it to the west shore and the north shore; staying at the Hyatt allowed us to drive an hour in either direction and be on either shore! The Grand Hyatt is massive, with 406 guest-rooms each part of the hotel is immaculately groomed with beauty in every direction. Poipu Beach is located a short walk away from the property where you can grab a bite to eat or hang out at the beach where you might be lucky enough to have sea turtles swimming alongside you!
Back at the resort you could always go and lounge at the 45,000 square foot spa, from facials to massages and all the good treatments in between you could stay all day. The restaurants at the resort were amazing, Tidepools was our favorite, with floating bungalows sitting on a Koi-filled lagoon the ambiance of the place won over our hearts before we even ordered our meals! We enjoyed all the food that the resort offered, but around the island of Kauai we found such amazing options for authentic Hawaiian meals. From food trucks linked up together in grassy meadows to the beautiful BeachHouse restaurant that sits on the bluffs at Poipu. Your can go from 5-star restaurant’s to the local hang out in just a few minutes!
From the food to the adventures, the locals on the island will tell you that you have to make your way to Waimea Canyon Kauai on the west shore, it’s known to be the grand canyon of Kauai, and from our jaw-dropping experience, it was somehow more incredible than we could have imagined, from the huge waterfalls that drop into the crater of the valley, to the huge red rocks as far as you can see! You can either drive the hour from Poipu for sightseeing or you could gear up for the endless hikes you could go on! From the West shore to the North shore, our journey continued and we seemed to enter the land of lush. Green as far as you can see, it is a jungle-like experience going through the north shore, seeing the locals surfing to the famous beaches such as Tunnels beach. Our team found ourselves going back to the north shore day after day, it was a dream!
Wrapping up our trip, we have to fill you in on the quick go-to spots in Kauai for a little island’s goodness. Starting with Wishing-Well Shave Ice on the north shore was the BEST shave iced we’ve ever had. Chicken In A Barrel on an old plantation on the water on the West shore was some of the best food we ate on the island and the restaurant was on a big open field where kids could run or you could take a walk to the beach. And finally, the beach at Poipu was a wonderful experience, laying in the warm shallow clear water with sea turtles swimming around you; it was an unreal experience. We hope all these tips have set you up with all you need for your next trip to the Islands. We left a piece of our hearts on Kauai, we can’t wait to go back!
